Identifying And Managing Your Tropical Fish Species

Tropical fish come in a variety of different species. First of all, you have freshwater tropical fish, and saltwater tropical fish. These are the two main and distinct categories that all breeds of tropical fish can be divided into. Within these categories are different species – did you know that piranhas, carnivore fish and other anti-social tropical fish all fall within the “tropical” category?

The last thing you’d want, as a new owner of tropical fish, is to purchase tropical fish species such as piranhas or other related carnivores. Would you really want a flesh eating fish to be in the same fish tank as a beautiful yellow finned, delicate tropical fish species breed? I know I certainly wouldn’t! So exercise due care and diligence when deciding which tropical fish species you would like to put in your tropical fish tank.

Now some tropical fish species don’t get along with one another, even though they’re not carnivores. Indeed, some tropical fish species are just naturally shy and don’t mix with any other species other than their own. For this reason you may want to do a little research and ground work before deciding upon which tropical fish species you would like to integrate in your fish tank, as choosing two or more species that don’t get along with one another won’t be fun to watch at all!

Fish interaction is the main thing that makes keeping and maintaining a fish aquarium so interesting. If your fish live rather boring and dull lives, then you too will soon grow bored of looking at them! Whilst having a fish tank may be quite a novelty of sorts among your friends, if you want to have an enjoyable time watching your fish, then ensure you purchase the right types of tropical fish species.

Conduct further research into discus fish, freshwater tropical fish and saltwater tropical fish. There are so many different species and breeds to choose from that I couldn’t even begin to attempt to list them here. Speak to your local pet shop store owner and ask them their opinion on what tropical fish species would be the most enjoyable to have within your tropical fish tank.

Do the groundwork now, and you’ll save yourself hassle later! There’s no point in just choosing some random tropical fish species, putting them in your fish tank, and hoping for the best. Planning how your fish tank will run before you’ve even set it up will lead you to long term enjoyment, and you’ll be a new tropical fish hobbyist in no time.

Essential Tips When Buying Tropical Fish For Your Aquarium

Tropical fish are beautiful creatures.Such a wide variety of species available; colors, shapes and sizes from which to choose from are also abound. It is, however, also important to realize that just as there exists great variety in appearance, so too does there exist great differences in temperament and compatibility among different species of fish. Therefore, before embarking on your first foray to buy tropical fish there are a few factors to keep in mind.

Where To Buy?

When buying fish, you are no longer limited to the selection available at your local pet store. In the present day, there are many reputable online tropical fish stores from which you can buy tropical fish and have them shipped to your home.

Brick-and-mortar pet shops provide you the advantage of being able to see the actual fish that you are about to purchase. They also allow you to browse and study different fish behaviors over time prior to purchasing. In most cases, these pet shops will also have qualified and knowledgeable staff ready to answer any question that you may have when you buy tropical fish.

Relying on internet based tropical fish stores will usually provide you with a greater diversity of available species. Although the personal contact is lost, most do provide great customer support and also provide valuable reference sections on their websites. These reference sections can be used to gain further knowledge on the behavior of different species prior to buying.

Temperament

Imagine placing together a fierce pit bull and a fluffy kitten in a small backyard. In this extreme example the disparity in temperament is quite obvious. Incredibly, many novice aquarium enthusiasts do not take temperament compatibility into consideration when selecting tropical fish. Being aware of the individual aggressiveness and compatibility of different species before you buy tropical fish is paramount. Traditionally, amongst the most mild-mannered tropical fish are the mollies, tetras and rainbow fish.

There are many sources for obtaining this type of comparative information. A good place to start is the internet, followed by your local public library. Your local aquarium or pet shop is also a good source for this type of information.

Behavior

Different species of fish will also have different behavior patterns in terms of their social interaction with other fish, eating habits and habitat preferences. This should also be taken into consideration when you buy tropical fish. Species, such as high fins, display schooling behavior. In large tanks this can provide for impressive scenes of multiple fish moving in unison. Placing such fish in small numbers or in smaller aquariums could actually be detrimental to them. Behavior can also be used to assist in keeping your tank clean. Being aware of the eating habits of catfish species would alert you to the fact that they make for effective bottom dwelling scavengers that help in keeping the tank substrate clean. Knowing the different fish species behaviors will help you obtain an aquarium that displays a rich and vibrant tapestry of behaviors. This will ensure that there is always something interesting to look at in all areas of the tank. Complementing, yet contrasting behaviors is what provides the depth of beauty to any aquarium

As long as you are aware that you must research the temperament and behavior of each species before you buy tropical fish, you will end up with an aquarium that displays the diversity that you want and that is also healthy for the fish themselves.

Tropical Betta Fish

Article by Hayden Riley

Tropical Betta Fish

For many years, the Siamese Betta fish has been exclusively kept by hobbyists in Siam (now Thailand). Presently, the Tropical Betta Fish has grown in popularity all over the world, although not for the sole purpose of fish fighting but as an aquarium pet. Through the years of delicate cultivation, pet stores took consideration on the various varieties from their original ancestors. Rather of just single colors, they can now be bought in a wide range of shades such as red, blue, black, dun, and yellow.

Also, the fins of the Tropical Betta Fish have significantly increased and are much complicated; amongst the various kinds of varieties available are the Delta Tail, Crown Tail, Half Moon etc. The male Betta fish have long prominent fins and do all the aggression. On the other hand, females have shorter fins and are not as prominent in color as the males. Fascinatingly, Bettas are air thrivers; they have a special organ, the lanyrinth, to transform water molecules into oxygen and they will surely die if they cannot reach the surface.

The natural habitat of Betta tropical fish is warm rice paddies in the Southeast Asia. Found mostly in leaves and branches of outgrowths, these predatory fish hunt for small creatures such as insect larvae and shrimp.

Even though the Bettas you can find in pet stores today have been bred in captivity, their aquarium should mimic their natural environment. Thus, the fish tank that have aquatic plant and that has slow water currents will be appropriate. A shade, with a few openings to provide air passage, must also be provided to avoid them from jumping out the tank.

Bettas thrive in warmer temperatures so the fish tank should be maintained between 75-86 degrees Fahrenheit with a bit of acidity (6.5 pH ) Their nutritional diet should composed chiefly of protein flakes and foods such as brine shrimps, worms etc. Bettas can expand to about 3 in. And could live up for three years if well-cared for. As far as the aquarium residents are concerned, Bettas can get along with most tropical fish. However, it is not advisable to keep them with aggressive species such as those tropical fish that are attracted to pick fioght with elaborate fins. Male bettas can be maintained in the same aquarium only if they are well-maintained, or else you can assume some injuries or even fatality.

Betta tropical fish procreate in a special and interesting way. The male will create numerous bubbles at the surface and create a floating love nest. Then, he would try to woo a female by showing his fins on display; the colors will be in their most vivid intensity and the impressive state also.

If the females are attracted and ready for a love romance, her coloration will also change and she will be covered with dark stripes. Her belly will also be prominently rounder and she would start releasing eggs.

This type of courtship can get difficult with much chasing and aggression that could lead to some minor injuries. When the couple is ready to mate, they will swim in the bubble nest and will entangle their bodies. The Betta male will squeeze the female to release the eggs that will be fertilized by the male.

Keeping Betta tropical fish is easy if you have the passion, determination and enthusiasm.

Tropical Aquarium Fish of Lake Malawi

Article by Tom Williams

Fish from Lake Malawi in Africa come in many beautiful colours, shapes and sizes. They are readily available for your home aquarium and generally a great choice of fish for your aquarium. As long as some general rules are adhered to.

Lake Malawi is a large, freshwater lake in East Africa and is the eighth largest lake in the world. Recent years has seen an abundance of Malawi cichlids available to purchase in pet shops and aquatic centres but they are not the average community fish. Lake Malawi cichlids are extremely territorial fish and will defend their territory to the death, especially during breeding. This means that they must only be kept in a species aquarium with other Lake Malawi cichlids. Fighting and squabbling will happen in a Malawi cichlid tank but as long as the correct fish are chosen this should not cause many problems. A great way to combat overly aggressive aquariums is to slightly over stock your tank, making sure you have good filtration to cope with the amount of fish. This provides a more diluted aggression and will generally result in a calmer tank.

Cichilds of Malawi also require a slightly altered diet to normal community fish. They generally rasp on algae stuck to rocks in the lake, with the exception of a few Haplochromis and other species that may predate on insects and smaller fish, and therefor their diet in the aquarium should replicate this. Try to feed your cichlids a vegetable or spirulina pellet or frozen food. There are many foods available specifically manufactured for Lake Malawi cichlids.

So as long as you research you species, feed them correctly and keep your aquarium well filtered and maintained Lake Malawin cichlids can be a great fish to keep and will provide hours of entertainment and no doubt some baby fish also!

Tropical Aquarium Or Marine Aquarium?

Article by Leandro Gunnar Fortin

Marine is actually a saying used to describe saltwater environments. Typical seawater contains between 33 and 36 ppt of salt (the same as 33-36 grams per litre). Marine fish tanks need different equipment to tropical fish tanks. think about for your marine aquarium is marine salt. Not to be mistaken with table salt or aquarium salt, as marine salt is unique. It is actually made by using a desalination technique of natural seawater, or alternatively it can be manufactured synthetically using the right balance of elements and additives.

To tell you how much salt is in the water you’ll need a hydrometer. It’s a vital but inexpensive tool to keep a marine tank, and it ought to be used when producing up water for a water change. These are not that hard to use and many feature a built-in thermometer.

It’s important to remember that warm salt water evaporates at a rapid rate, such as a large tank can lose 25l each week or more. Marine reef life is not accustomed to fluctuations in salinity, so a computerized top-up device makes sense. This requires a float switch which is placed in your primary tank and connected with a pump that you just place in the top-up water, so your water level can be topped up automatically in the primary tank.Another fundamental piece of equipment you’ll want to help you maintain clean marine water is a protein skimmer. This can be used jointly with a traditional biological filtration system or as part of a natural filtration system side by side with living rock.

Protein skimmers work by creating small bubbles that arise through the plastic column to the surface, collecting proteins in the water as they rise. These proteins would certainly be converted into ammonia and nitrate by biological filtration. There are many different protein skimmers on the market to pick from, including external and internal models, most powered using a powerhead, however, some smaller ones are powered by an airpump linked with a limewood airstone to supply tiny bubbles. The best idea is to get the biggest skimmer are able to afford as these will be the most effective, but ensure that it fits your tank first.

Powerheads once were used as part of under-gravel filtration systems, the difference is they are mainly employed for moving water around, as modern reef aquariums need a good amount of flow around the tank in order to meet the requirements of the corals.

Surge controllers or wavemakers, as they are best known, control the flow of one or several powerheads to make them come on at intervals. This leads to a more natural flow of seawater, and the effect looks good too. Some will even imitate the change in the flow of water between nighttime and daytime, and low and high tides.

Unfortunately powerheads along with other equipment produce heat and marine tanks hate heat. High-powered lights are the principle culprit for producing excess heat so it can be essential to purchase a cooler or a chiller inside your tank. These are generally a sort of refrigeration unit that hook up to the tank so when water is pumped throughout the unit it is chilled and returned to the tank. There’s a lot of other equipment that one could also add to your tank to maintain the water clear and the levels right but it can turn out to be extremely expensive. Before starting looking around at marine fish tanks understand all the potential costs and pitfalls prior to reaching your final decision about what to purchase.

Keeping a marine tank isn’t easy but it can be quite rewarding should you get it right.

Caring For Freshwater Tropical Aquarium Fish

Article by Brian Meehan

Tropical fish aquariums have been gaining in popularity over the last few years because they’re getting easier to maintain and there is a huge variety of fish types to choose from. The care for freshwater tropical fish is less complicated than the more delicate saltwater tropical fish. However, this doesn’t mean that you should be lax in taking care of these species. Rare or not, you must always give your utmost care to each fish living in your aquarium.

Feeding Tropical Fish

Feeding your fish is as important as the water that they are living in. If you do not give your fish the nutrition they require, their health will be affected. Freshwater tropical aquarium fish can either be carnivorous, herbivorous or omnivorous. You need to know your fish classification and feed it accordingly. It is most likely that you will be keeping a variety of fish types and will need a few different types of fish food to suit

You also have to know the manner of how your fish eats so that you will have an idea where to place their food at feeding time. Fish can be top, middle or bottom feeders. Another point worth remembering is that fish should have a certain feeding pattern to follow per day. If you usually feed them at ten in the morning, then make sure that it’s done at the same time everyday. By doing all this you will be guaranteed a healthy and lively fish.

Setting up a Home for your Fish

Setting up your tropical aquarium fish is very important. You need to get the initial setup right to avoid big problems later on. What is essential is knowing the type of water to be used, the level and the pH of the water and the surrounding plant life that you plan to build. If possible, even for a beginner, get the biggest aquarium that space and budget allow. A bigger tank will allow you to keep more fish, and water quality is easier to control in larger tanks.

However, if you are working with limited space and budget or just want to get your feet wet at fish keeping before diving in, a smaller tank is an option. You will just have to keep a closer eye on water quality and avoid overcrowding the tank.

Best of luck with setting up your fish tank and hope you will be enjoying this fascinating hobby for years to come.
