An Introduction To Necessary Factors Of Aquarium Equipment

Monday, May 7th, 2012

Article by Cody Valkos

Aquarium equipment is a necessary part of the aquarium-keeping hobby. It not only keeps your fish healthy and robust, it also keeps your water clear and sparkling so you can fully enjoy your aquatic display. The aquarium equipment we choose affects wild coral reefs in two important ways. First and most obviously, it ultimately determines how successful we are as aquarists. The more successful we are, the less livestock we consume. We know that better equipment will generally make us more successful. If your aquarium equipment is plugged into a normal household switchboard, with standard circuit breakers, it is highly unlikely that they will cut-out in the event of a fault in the equipment leading to a possible leak to earth of the low magnitude needed to cause a bad shock. Fortunately there is a simple, but unfortunately fairly expensive, safety measure which can be taken. This is to install a CORE BALANCE EARTH LEAKAGE CIRCUIT BREAKER or ELCB for short, into the wiring system for your aquariums. Saltwater Aquarium Equipment: A Saltwater or Marine aquarium should be all glass or plastic, no smaller than gallons for the beginner.Remember, larger aquariums are generally easier to take care of, but harder to set up initially. You must have a sturdy stand or base that will support the aquarium, water, and habitat weight. For a gallon aquarium, the weight will be a minimum of pounds. You should also cut a thick piece of Styrofoam the same size as your aquarium base to be used as a cushion. When buying reef aquarium equipment on EBay it is important to know your seller. Make sure he or she has a large positive feedback rating and read through the auctions carefully and fully. Make sure you are not getting over charged for shipping and make sure that they describe in detail what they are selling, how they are selling it, shipping and payment. It is also important to note if the seller has a return policy and what exactly it entails. If you have any questions before buying any reef aquarium equipment you should ask the seller a question. If he or she is a confident seller then they should respond promptly, if they don’t respond then its best to look for another auction.A third piece of freshwater aquarium equipment – and perhaps the most essential once you setup your aquarium – is the heater. The temperature of the water is of utmost importance because it affects all the life in the aquarium and installing a heater would allow you to maintain the ideal temperature required for all the life in the tank at all times. There are several types of heaters to choose from, and the right one should be dependent on the volume of the water in the aquarium. It is also advisable to secure a heater that has an adjustable thermostat since various species of fish require different temperatures.Added key patch of freshwater aquarium equipment that you penury to opine near are vivarium filter systems. Filters are grave because they destroy both somatogenic and chemical wastes, duty the semiaquatic environment anicteric and healthy to proof spiritedness. There are various filters useable in the industry and it is unchaste to get scattered by the bailiwick.Another key piece of freshwater aquarium equipment that you need to think about are aquarium filter systems. Filters are important because they eliminate both physical and chemical wastes, keeping the aquatic environment healthy and able to support life. There are several filters available in the market and it is easy to get confused by the technology. Yet another critical bit of freshwater aquarium equipment aquarium that you ought to think about are aquarium filter systems. Filters are vital because they eradicate equally bodily and chemical wastes, maintaining the aquatic environment healthy and in a position to support daily life. There are many filters out there within the market place and it is easy to get perplexed by the technological innovation.

How to Set-Up Your New Aquarium

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

Article by Chintamani Abhyankar

When you are planning to install an aquarium in your home the best and the simplest way will be to first buy a fifteen, twenty or if you want a bigger one, then a 29 gallon fish tank made of glass. Along with that particular air-driven gravel filter as well as a plastic tank top. You may also need a heater to maintain the perfect water temperature inside the tank. But if you want to be a little economical at the beginning you can go for an incandescent light instead of a fluorescent. In terms of fish tank accessories if you beginner it will be best for you to choose wood or plastic plants, stone or ceramic decorations which are available in almost any pet shop. When you go out to buy these things you will see that most of the shops have them (except decoration) and also offer you at a reasonable and discounted price. One important item related to your aquarium set up is the stand upon which the tank will remain. You must get a stand which is capable of bearing the weight of your fish tank. When you have got all the necessary things or setting up your aquarium the process of installing is quite simple. First decide the place where you want to place your aquarium. Place it in such a place where you can enjoy the fish in a relaxing manner. While finalizing the place be careful to see that you are placing it in a place where it will not get much direct sunlight which is essential for controlling algae. After that, put your tank on the stand and check to see if there is good contact between the fish tank and the stand. Then see what kind of filter you have. If it is an Under Gravel Filter (UGF), then you will have to place it now. It will go to the bottom of the tank. You need to place the lift tubes of the filter in their sockets. You can see the set up instructions written on the that container. Before putting inside the tank, you need to first rinse your filter thoroughly. Also see that lowest point of the gravel is near the front of the tank. However, if your filter is not UGF and it goes inside the fish tank, you can now make it ready and place it into the tank. Make sure that you wash everything with cool water before putting inside the tank. When this task is over, you can move on and add the heater as well as the water pump if you require. First decide a location inside the tank for your pump but remember that you need to place it above the water level. This is required because if you do not do this water can drain back out through the air tube when the power goes off resulting in the damage of the pump along with other things. However, if you find it difficult to place the air pump over the tank water level, you can get yourself some check-valves for the air line. You can also see the instructions which have come with your filter to check how to connect the air line with the air stones. But if your filter is not an UGF you must check to see whether that filter needs an air pump connected or not and also how to attach one. Again, if you are operating your filter with a power head, and not with an air pump, you must place remember to place that power head on top of the lift tube following the instructions on the package. Make SURE that your pumps and. You must do it by reading instructions in the box of your filter. Now that you are done with the set up of your aquarium you can now concentrate on decorating it. You need to place your decorations inside the tank at this point and check how they are looking. One thing that you must remember is that plastic and ceramic decorations will always entrap air and will float as you put water in the tank. So do not be surprised when it happens to you.Once you are done with putting your decorations inside the tank, you can w put the top of the fish tank. If you have bought a glass top or an integrated plastic top it is very simple. These are made in such a way that it is easy to cut the back side according to your need in order to make room for power cords, filters, heaters as well as air lines. Just do it with a pair of scissors or a knifeNow you are in a position to add water to your new fish tank. You can directly pour water into it without treating it as you do not have any fish or plant at present. You can add any treatment when the tank is full. For pouring water you can use any bowel or any other thing from your kitchen. When your tank gets filled you should let it remain in that way for an hour or two so that your air stones are saturated. Turn your air pump as well as the water heater. It is always advisable to wait for one or two days before putting any fish inside because in the meantime the inside temperature will stabilize and you can also make sure that there are no leaks in your fish tank.

Reef Aquarium Maintenance – Lighting

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Article by RC Moore

Many reef aquarium enthusiasts are well aware and keep a rigorous schedule of doing weekly and even daily maintenance on their reef aquariums to keep the water quality in check. From daily dosing of calcium and ph stabilizer to keep the alkalinity, ph and calcium levels at a level for optimum coral growth, to weekly water changes to keep nitrates and nitrites in check and add trace elements. We all know about keeping the mechanical filters cleaned to keep from depleting oxygen levels. But may people forget about the importance of maintaining the lighting on their reef aquariums. It is not something that is noticed by the human eye because the change in intensity and color happens at such a gradual pace. The gradual deterioration of the lighting can be evident in several ways in the reef aquarium. There seems to be something wrong. The corals are not opening fully like they used to and some may even start to regress. There is suddenly growth of unwanted algae with seemingly perfect water quality.

You would not think of waiting until ammonia and nitrates get out of hand to start doing water changes, so why wait until the lighting has deteriorated to change the bulbs. Many aquarium light fixtures have a glass or plexiglass cover that over time will build up a fine coating of dust reducing the amount of light reaching the corals. This cover should be cleaned on a monthly basis.

The manufacturers for metal halides recommend changing the bulbs every six months. Fluorescent bulbs such as VHO, power compacts, actinic, and T5s recommend replacement at 8 – 12 months. Many studies have concluded that metal halide bulbs can loose up to 50 percent of their original intensity and color temperature with in 1 year. In other words, a 14,000K HQI bulb after a year could have a color temperature of 7,000K. This would explain the algae growth since plants tend to utilize more of the red spectrum, while the zooxanthellae found in the coral tissues thrive more on the blue part of the spectrum. In simple terms, the higher the color temperature, the higher the blue part of the spectrum is visible and the lower the color temperature, the higher the red part of the spectrum is visible. To simulate the lighting for the reef aquarium we need to understand the light that occurs naturally on the reef with sunlight. The ocean has a blue color because it is the blue part of the spectrum that penetrates the water the deepest and the red and yellow are filtered out.

Color Shift and Variation

New metal halide bulbs need to have the arc tube chemicals “burn-in” for approximately 100 hours before they reach their optimum color and light level. This is why new lamps can sometimes be unstable or vary in color. Many manufacturers “burn-in” their bulbs before they are sold. As the lamps age, chemical changes occur in the lamp causing shifts in the chromaticity of the lamps. Different lamp designs shift in different ways, and different lamps from the same group may shift in different amounts.

Generally, over the economic life lamps will shift 200K to 300K in color temperature. As a group of lamps ages together in a facility, the lamps will generally shift at the same rate causing very little color variation from lamp to lamp. However, if new replacement lamps are introduced into the group of lamps, color differences may be more noticeable, because the new lamps have not aged and shifted with the remainder of lamps. This is just one of the reasons why many users prefer to group relamp as opposed to spot relamping.

Although Fluorescent bulbs do not have a burn-in time and last longer they tend to build up a coating on the tube, reducing the intensity and color temperature.

PAR – Polysynthetic Available Radiation

While PAR might be an unfamiliar term in comparison to the more often seen Lumens or Lux, it is by far the most appropriate way for us to assess light in connection with the reef tank since it measures the light intensity of the spectrum that is utilized by the corals. Lumens and Lux are measurements of how bright a light source appears to the human eye and as such has little relevance in the reef aquarium. I believe that a PAR meter is an instrument that all serious reef aquarists should own. Buying one that has a submersible sensor allows you to measure the amount light that’s actually reaching your corals. This in turn gives you the information you need when positioning or repositioning your corals to ensure that all the various species are receiving light that’s optimum for their requirements. Saltwater Aquarium Supplies That Will Complete Fish Tank

Saturday, April 28th, 2012

Article by Roberta Barrow

When setting up a saltwater aquarium, there are several things that you first need to gather to ensure that your fish tank will be arranged appropriately and effectively. This most important of all supplies is of course the fish tank or the aquarium itself. Aquariums can be made of various materials such as glass and acrylic. Acrylic cots more, but you are certain about its durability. It also lasts quite longer than glass aquariums. It is also clearer and offers better insulation. You have to determine where this aquarium needs to be placed. The area where the aquarium is positioned typically affects the survival of your fish. You also need to choose the size of aquarium that will suit your fish. Lighting. Depending on the reef system you want to put up, you will need a type or system of lighting that will be suitable for it. Another consideration on aquarium lighting is the kind of saltwater fish that you have chosen to care for. There are compact fluorescent variants that offer highly intense light. They do not use too much power compared with the standard lighting fixture. Bio-wheel filter. Biological filtration is important for digesting nitrite and ammonia. This filtration equipment will ensure that beneficial bacteria remain in the aquarium. Power Head And Sweeper. This equipment allows circulation of water in the aquarium that produces current. This current aids in improving water quality. Aquarium Sterilizers. This UV sterilizer is essential in reducing the amount of pathogenic organisms in the saltwater aquarium. If the pathogenic organisms are allowed in abundant amount in the fish tank, your fish is more likely to acquire diseases. Reef sand. Live sand has beneficial bacteria. It also contains essential minerals such as magnesium, strontium, carbonate and calcium. Trace elements. They help stock up the elements essential for the survival of your fish. Essential elements are depleted by the metabolic activity of your fish. This material or supply contains stabilized elements to help ensure growth and health of the marine organisms in the aquarium. Mix salts and hydrometer. With the use of this material, you can recreate the salty sea water chemistry essential for the survival of your fish. With the help of mix salts, you can maintain the necessary level of pH and you can also achieve maximum levels of magnesium and calcium. The hydrometer will help in measuring salinity of your fish tank water by measuring the specific gravity of your fish tank salt water. A pH monitor will help measure pH level inside the aquarium. Heater/Thermometer. Smaller aquariums may do well with one heater, but larger fish tanks will certainly require more. The thermometer will help measure the temperature inside the tank to ensure the appropriate temperature for the fish. Maintenance supplies. These are items essential in keeping your aquarium clean and tidy. Siphon hose or tubes, algae scraper and magnet are cleaning tools for your fish tank. You will also need water containers or buckets, spare equipment for replacing certain parts or components in the aquarium and a lot more.
